History
Ed Hackbarth and David Jameson founded the first Yermo, California eatery on September 16, 1964. The eatery did exceptionally well. Because of this, other eateries have since opened. In short order, Hackbarth, Jameson, and Del Taco franchisee Dick Naugle formed Red-E-Food Systems, Inc. The chain’s reach grew to include all of Southern California. At some point in the early 1970s, Dick Naugle decided to leave the company.Formerly known as Red-E-Food Systems, Inc. is now known as Del Taco, Inc.
The business expanded swiftly thereafter. In 1976, Jameson and Hackbarth sold Del Tacos Menu to investors, who subsequently sold W.R. Grace & Company the rights to the Del Taco name in the United States. By 1978, the chain had expanded to a hundred locations. Bunny tacos, quesadillas, and sundaes made their way onto the menu, among other new additions. Del Taco and the Naugles’ restaurant group combined in 1988. The Naugles family restaurant chain was founded by Dick Naugle in the 1970s. The merger helped the business expand both in terms of size and location. The restaurant also began operating 24 hours a day.
The company started a campaign to boost brand awareness and enhance the overall shopping experience. These efforts entailed updating the restaurant interiors and logo. The corporation was able to expand beyond the Golden State after regaining ownership of its name from W. R. Grace and corporation. Three new storefronts will be established in strategic locations: the Northeast Corridor, St. Louis, and Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2008, it has opened its 500th restaurant, having more than doubled in size. In addition to reopening in Colorado and the Pacific Northwest, the chain also reopened in Texas and Georgia.
In 1993, disaster struck when Del Taco declared bankruptcy. High-priced leases and a $3 million lawsuit from a former supplier put the company in dire straits financially. The number of employees grew and shrank between 1994 and 1998. By December of 1998, there were just 325 locations left. In 2004, it was acquired by Sagittarius Brands, LLC. The company had grown to 500 outlets by January of 2008. The company was acquired by Levy Acquisition Corporation on June 30, 2015. That was the day the company went public. The franchise has expanded to many cities across the United States, especially in the West.
