On July 18, 1984, Craig and Lea Culver, along with Craig’s parents George and Ruth, launched the first Culver’s restaurant in their hometown of Sauk City, Wisconsin. Craig Culver had the inspiration for a whole new eatery in 1981. He fused his boyhood favourite, fresh frozen custard, with his mother’s handmade hamburgers. Culver’s Butterburgers and Fresh Frozen Custard were born from this union. This led to the 1984 opening of the first store, which was located in Sauk City. Baraboo, Wisconsin was the site of the first successful franchise. In Buffalo, Minnesota, the first restaurant was established outside of Wisconsin. Culver Franchising System, Inc., a privately held firm, manages the eatery. Culver Franchising System, Inc. has called Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin home since its founding in 1987.
