History of Ben & Esther’s Vegan Jewish Deli

In 2019, Justin King opened Ben & Esther’s Vegan Jewish Deli in the Roseway area of northeast Portland. The proprietor saw such a promising reaction from customers that he created a second location in the Vernon area of northeastern Alberta.

After the success of their original location in the Gaslamp Quarter, Ben & Esther’s Vegan Jewish Deli expanded to the oceanside at the long-closed Tambo Cafe’s former San Diego location.

The first Ben & Esther’s restaurant to open outside of Oregon was in San Diego’s Aztec Village Center. The Portland-based firm first opened its doors to customers in 2019. They specialized in a variety of animal goods. Later additions of vegetarian-friendly options helped boost their popularity.

Vegan deli classics that are fan favorites are still available in the restaurant’s North County location. Deli sandwiches are often served on marble rye bread, and the bagel and schmear section is completely customizable.

Bagels in a variety of flavors and textures, including jalapeno, poppy, pumpernickel, and jalapeno schmear, are only the beginning. Only serving macaroni and cheese, tuna, and egg salads makes it a deli, but not challah, potato latkes, or matzo ball soup makes it Jewish.
