Seafood Menu At Black-Eyed Pea
- Grilled “n’ Awlins” Catfish W/dirty Rice and garlic Cream sauce is a signature dish at Black-Eyed Pea, with the catfish being marinated in Creole seasoning before grilling to give it an extra kick of flavour. The dirty rice is made with Cajun spices, celery, onion, and bell peppers for a savoury side dish that pairs perfectly with the flavorful catfish. The garlic cream sauce drizzled on top completes the meal by adding a subtle hint of sweetness.
- Fried or Grilled Shrimp are another popular seafood item at Black-Eyed Pea. The shrimp are hand-breaded, fried until golden brown, grilled, and slightly charred, and served with a cocktail sauce.
- Baked Atlantic White Fish is the perfect seafood meal for those looking for something lighter. The fish is marinated in white wine, herbs, and spices before baking in a light lemon butter sauce. This dish is accompanied by wild rice pilaf and sautéed vegetables for added flavour and texture.
- Fried or Spicy Grilled Catfish Fillets are a must-try at Black-Eyed Pea. The catfish fillets are lightly seasoned with Cajun spices before deep-fried or grilled until golden brown and crispy on the outside while remaining moist.
History of Black-Eyed Pea
Gene Street and Phil Cobb were the primary creative forces behind the conception of this eatery. The former was a famous restaurateur, and his fame helped propel the entire company to prominence.
Both Street and a man named Phil Cobb were instrumental in the restaurant’s 1975 founding. The network of eateries began to develop, and it found particular success in the American South.
By then, they had 130 operational locations, but Unigate plc bought them out for $65 million. However, DenAmerica bought them back in the 1990s.
DenAmerica experienced commercial success for a while, but the company ultimately declared bankruptcy in 2001. As a result of this decision, over forty stores were shut down, and today only 44 remain open.
The folks who had a hand in opening the restaurant, however, were not about to give up so easy; they planned to expand their customer base with the help of new menu items including appetizers, seafood, and grilled fare.
The restaurant was still doing well in 2016 despite some changes brought about by the closure of its original location in Oak Lawn, which had been open for about 40 years.
Twelve additional Texas eateries that had gone bankrupt the year before were forced to close that very same year. In 2019, another Hendersonville store was forced to close.
Due to closures, relocations, and other changes, only 10 of their stores are still open today. This, however, is hardly a sign that their ordeal is over. The popularity of their food and the number of customers they serve both continue to rise.
