History of Boloco
Originally opened in 1997 under the name The Wrap, this chain of restaurants has come a long way since its humble beginnings. After acquiring another eatery, they changed its name to The Wrap and Smoothie Bar.
They partnered with Jera’s Juice, a juice manufacturer, and opened additional eateries across the country.
The original creators intended to open further franchises. After being purchased by a group of business owners in 2005, Boloco Menu With Prices became the company’s new moniker. The original title may have alluded to a product that has already been packaged for sale, which is why it was changed.
By 2006, they had opened a few more outlets across the United States, but the original Boston-area entrepreneurs had already rebranded under the Currito moniker. Both franchises, by chance, featured several menu items that were nearly identical without being affiliated with one another.
By 2007, Boloco had also opened up shop in Concord, Burlington, Vermont, and New Hampshire in addition to its original location in Boston.
Despite having 22 stores open by 2014, the company still lost millions of dollars after a controlling share was acquired by Winona Capital Management.
By 2016, only ten of their stores had survived having been forced to close. They both received their B Corp certification around the same time, and in 2017, after more than a decade in business, they were forced to close their location in Harvard Square.
